Freedom of speech

It is a fundamental policy of the University, as an academic institution, that in its activities there should be freedom of speech within the law.

Our Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech is robust and sets out clear expectations and processes for activities affiliated to, funded by, or branded as Durham University.

To our knowledge, in recent years, we are not aware of a single occasion where a speaker has not been invited to speak at the University due to controversial views.
