Ensuite Accommodation on Medical Grounds
Applicants requiring a specific type of accommodation on disability / medical grounds; information relating to room allocation and associated accommodation charges
Durham University is committed to ensuring an accessible applicant experience. We offer a range of college accommodation room types, including en-suite, standard, shared and accessible options across both catered and self-catered colleges.
During your application process, you will receive a request to provide any additional information that may be relevant to your accommodation application, for example, disability / medical information. Room types are allocated randomly during the application process unless a specific disability / medical related need is identified, and as a result of your disability the University has a duty to provide you with a specific room type as a reasonable adjustment in order to meet your needs.
As part of our commitment to providing reasonable adjustments in respect of accommodation allocation to meet the needs of disabled students, we guarantee an en-suite / accessible room where there is an evidenced disability / medical related need for this provision. This need is assessed by the University during the application process; it is therefore important that any relevant information is shared when requested, to enable us to meet your needs within appropriate timeframes.
Accommodation Charge Information
A link to accommodation charges can be found here.
In addition to a guarantee of an ensuite room, if you require an en-suite room on disability / medical grounds and are thus liable for the en-suite accommodation charge as a result, you will automatically have this charge reduced to match the lower equivalent standard room rate if:
- You are a Home Undergraduate applicant / Home PGCE applicant and meet the eligibility criteria for the Durham Grant Scheme; or
- You are a Home Postgraduate Taught applicant and have successfully applied for the Postgraduate Student Support Scholarship. Please note that details of this fund will be advertised in February / March 2025.
*Please read the relevant information relating to the scheme applicable to you to ensure that you are aware of all associated requirements.
For those occupying ensuite accommodation for any reason, the published en-suite accommodation rate will be charged in full if you are:
- An Undergraduate applicant and do not meet the criteria for the Durham Grant scheme;
- A Postgraduate Taught applicant and have not successfully applied for the Postgraduate Student Support Scholarship; or
- A Postgraduate Research student.
If you are assessed as needing ensuite accommodation but are ineligible for automatic consideration of the reduced accommodation charge:
If you are ineligible for automatic consideration of the standard accommodation charge but believe you will incur a financial shortfall due to a disability / medical related need to pay for en-suite accommodation, you can apply for additional support from the University’s Student Support Fund after you have registered as a student. Any applications for awards shall be assessed and awards made in accordance with the published eligibility criteria and terms published on the Student Support Fund webpages.
