We understand that interviews can seem daunting but they are an important part of the application process and are a good opportunity for you to tell us why you are interested in teaching and what motivates you.
We want to put you at ease and help to ensure you are as prepared as you can be, so we've put together some information below which lets you know what to expect from the interview process.
You will receive an email from the University’s admissions team to inform you whether you have been selected for interview. Unfortunately, not all applicants can be offered an interview.
If you are invited to interview, you will receive an email from the School of Education confirming the date of your interview. If the date is not suitable please contact us as soon as possible, we try to be accommodating. If you have any specific requirements regarding timings (for instance, if you live overseas and there is a significant time difference) please also let us know.
We will also ask you to submit some photo ID before you attend the interview, you also need to bring this ID to your interview. This is a DfE requirement.
PGCE candidates are asked to prepare a short presentation (3-5 minutes long) on a topic related to education, and review the supplied Safeguarding information.
BA candidates are not required to present but are expected to demonstrate some awareness of the current education landscape during interview.
You will then receive an invitation from an interviewer, inviting you to attend at a certain time via Teams or Zoom, and reminding you of the preparation activities.
Interviews are usually conducted by two people. One person will lead the interview, whilst the other takes notes however, they will endeavour to actively engage in the interview where possible.
You will be asked to produce your photo ID.
Try to relax. Not easy, but the interviewers are experienced and will try to put you at ease. The interview will feel like a discussion and you will be treated as an individual, with courtesy and professionalism.
University policy does not allow interviewers to see your application, to ensure objectivity and fairness.
PGCE candidates will be asked to deliver a presentation and both PGCE and BA candidates will be asked to answer some questions.
The interviewers are looking to identify your potential to consistently demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding set out in the Teachers’ Standards.
Both interviewers may ask supplementary questions.
You will have the opportunity to add any additional information which you feel may add value to your interview.
You will be able to ask questions. Frequently asked questions include information about the course, placements, living and studying in Durham, support to find a first teaching post, etc.
Finally, we will endeavour to notify you of the outcome of your interview as soon as possible but this may not happen immediately, so do not become anxious if you do not hear anything for a few days.
