Dr Radha Kapuria’s book has been longlisted for a book award that recognises non-fiction work on the history of India.
Radha Kapuria’s book Music in Colonial Punjab has been longlisted for the Karwaan Book Award 2024, recognising outstanding non-fiction work on the history of the Indian subcontinent.
Music in Colonial Punjab: Courtesans, Bards, and Connoisseurs 1800-1947 explores the rich musical history of undivided Punjab, from Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Lahore court to the Patiala darbar. Highlighting the pivotal role of female performers and classical traditions, it uncovers how music shaped and was shaped by colonialism, middle-class reform, and a shared cultural legacy across India and Pakistan.
The Karwaan Book Award is presented annually to recognize outstanding non-fiction works on the history of the Indian subcontinent.
