Durham expert appointed to UK Covid-19 Inquiry ethics panel
Healthcare law expert, Professor Emma Cave from our Durham Law School, has been appointed to the ethics advisory group of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry.
The UK Covid-19 Inquiry is the independent public inquiry set up to examine the UK’s response to, and impact of, the pandemic, and to learn lessons for the future.
Professor Cave, who is an expert in medical law and ethics, will be part of a team that ensures the Inquiry’s UK-wide listening exercise, Every Story Matters, maintains the highest ethical standards.
People’s experiences
Every Story Matters is the Inquiry’s way of engaging with people across the UK to hear their experiences of the pandemic, which can be brought together to understand the experience across the whole of the UK, including those seldom heard.
This will include among other groups the experiences of bereaved families, those who were shielding and healthcare staff.
The Ethics Advisory Group, of which Professor Cave will be a member, will review the research approach at key milestones and provide ethical advice.
Ethical advice
This is the fifth prestigious appointment for Emma, who has extensive expertise in healthcare law and medical ethics.
She serves on the core expert panel of the UK Parliament Health and Social Care Committee and chairs the General Medical Council’s Good Medical Practice advisory forum. Emma also recently advised the UK’s Infected Blood Inquiry on medical ethics and served on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
