Welcome

Professor Ann MacLarnon

Hatfield College is a vibrant and welcoming community to which each and every student belongs alongside other College members, reflecting our ethos and recent joint declaration #AllOneHatfield. We combine a thoroughly contemporary outlook with pride in our historical roots and traditions, gaining strength from our long-established community whilst constantly evolving to meet new challenges.

Established in 1846, as the second college of Durham University, with the explicit purpose of being open to a wide range of students, we greatly value the rich diversity of our College members who come from all sorts of backgrounds and places of origin, with all sorts of interests, experiences and views. Through multiple student community groups, celebrations at Formals, discussions, debates and many other activities, we strive to live out our ethos. Enabled by the Hatfield Trust which is funded by our alumni, we offer a range of bursaries and scholarships for incoming home undergraduates from low-income households supporting them to join in and participate fully without financial burden. Hatfield Bursaries covering core costs of College life are automatically provided to all such incoming students. Additionally, Hatfield Scholarships are available to home undergraduate offer holders from low-income households (application deadline April 27th 2025). The Hatfield Lioness and Guy Beresford Scholarships provide financial support for taught postgraduate students from developing countries and the North East of England.

We strive to ensure that all Hatfielders have the opportunities and encouragement to be the best they can be, reflecting the words of our motto, Vel Primus Vel Cum Primis. Numerous student clubs and societies for sports, communities groups, volunteering opportunities, careers events, music, drama and other arts-based ventures are organised by the student Common Rooms and by College. The Hatfield Trust funds internships, grants and awards for additional pursuits. Whether trying something new or keeping up an established interest, Hatfielders participate and enjoy a wide range of activities, learning and developing, creating and organising along the way.

Hatfield is a very strong, supportive community; Hatfielders look out for and care for each other. Whether students spend one, three, four or more years at the College, Hatfield provides a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable environment. Hatfielders carry the Hatfield spirit of participation and supportive community out into life and careers beyond. College members proudly proclaim once a Hatfielder always a Hatfielder, reflecting the tremendous warmth and loyalty the experience of belonging to Hatfield promotes.
