The UK National Clean Maritime Research Hub is making waves in the maritime industry with its ground breaking approach to decarbonisation. Launched in September 2023, this innovative hub has created a website to showcase the activities that are set to transform the sector by addressing critical research challenges and developing sustainable solutions for the future.

Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Department for Transport (DfT), the hub has secured a substantial grant of £7.4 million, with additional matched funding from project partners expected to reach £10 million by the end of its 43-month duration

This financial backing underscores the importance of the hub's mission to create environmentally, socially, and economically informed pathways for maritime decarbonisation

The hub's research is organized around five key themes:

  1. Maritime Fuel Scale-Up and Safety: Developing and scaling up alternative fuels that are safe and efficient for maritime use.
  2. Power and Propulsion Systems: Innovating new propulsion technologies to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.
  3. Port and Vessel Support Infrastructure: Enhancing infrastructure to support the adoption of clean technologies in ports and vessels.
  4. Vessel Design and Efficiency: Designing vessels that are more efficient and environmentally friendly.
  5. Digitalisation, Maritime Operations, and Finance: Leveraging digital technologies to optimize maritime operations and financial models for sustainability

The hub's interdisciplinary approach brings together academia, industry, policymakers, and the third sector to co-create solutions that are not only technically viable but also economically and socially sustainable

This collaborative effort is crucial in ensuring that the maritime sector can meet its decarbonisation targets and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.
