[09/24] Dr Hanna Ruszczyk, Assistant Professor in the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) was an invited speaker at the ‘Re-Thinking Digital Justice in Forced Migration’ event held on 26 September 2023 at Trinity College, University of Oxford.

The event was organized under the CSLS ERC ConflictNet project to consolidate research with regards to how AI and digital technologies are being used in contexts of forced migration. Presentations delved into current issues such as the digitalization of border and asylum governance, the controversial role of AI and digital technologies in humanitarian contexts and the digital agencies developed by migrants and asylum seekers across their journeys.

Dr Hanna Ruszczyk spoke about Digital Justice and Memory Making in Poland. She asked Dr Serhii Bilivnenko and Stanislav Cherkasov from Zaporizhzhia National University to reflect on their experiences during the active war.

They talked about how urban digital accessibility has facilitated memory making of the support/integration of forcibly displaces Ukrainians in Polish cities. Secondly, they explored how the Centre for Urban History in Lviv is utilising innovative ways to digitally document the war. Lastly, the digital techniques used for collecting oral history data in Zaporizhzhia region were described. In particular, forms of interviewing, photo-fixation and scanning of materials were highlighted. The power of the modern phone to document, make memories, and create a narrative that represents their impressions of the war was discussed.
