[09/24] Dr Hanna Ruszczyk discussed the intersection of caste and gender in cities at the RGS-IBG Annual Conference.

Dr Hanna Ruszczyk, PDRA in the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) at Durham University took part in the RGS-IBG Annual Conference for human geographers on 29 August 2024. Her presentation was part of a panel titled Mapping caste-gender intersections in urban geographies of the Global, where she discussed the intersection of caste and gender (not just women) in overlooked cities.

The panel was organised by Saanchi Saxena and Syeda Jenifa Zahan.

This talk was based on Dr Ruszczyk's ethnographic and longitudinal study of Bharatpur Nepal from 2014 to 2019. This research presents the experiences of mothers' groups, neighbourhood groups, governmental officials and development projects and considers who has power, who is kept invisible to whom and who can create the city in their imaginary.

You can read more about this important research on urban community resilience in Dr Ruszczyk's book Gender and Resilience in the City.
