[09/24] IHRR Director Professor Bruce D Malamud gave a lecture at the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) 2024 Lecture Series on the complex interplay between different natural hazards
The Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) Director, Professor Bruce D Malamud, gave a lecture at the 2024 National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) Lecture Series, at the University of the Philippines. The series was organised by the NIGS, the University of the Philippines Resilience Institute (UPRI), the Volcano-Tectonics Laboratory, and the Iuvenis Orbis Geological Fraternity.
Bruce's talk began with an extensive review of the existing literature, containing 90 interrelationships across 21 types of natural hazard. He analysed the shifting dynamics of exposure and risk, including processes that can trigger multi-hazard cascades, and the unique risks related to these.
Bruce also discussed his work on quantifying hazard interrelationships, and how a holistic approach to natural hazard assessment can help understand and manage these complex interactions.
