This series of seminars and workshops, convened by Dr Marc Schachter and Dr Sergey Tyulenev in association with Durham University's Centre for Intercultural Mediation (CIM), focuses on the cultural politics of translation in a comparative and cross-temporal way. The events consider how translation works in conjunction with other factors to mediate, facilitate or even impede the circulation of ideas, commodities, and people. It also explores the role of translation in the fashioning of national and diasporic identities. Among the issues addressed are both highly topical ones, such as the place of translation in contemporary refugee crises or the international book market, and those of historical significance, such as the impact of translation on the development of vernacular literatures at the dawn of print in Europe. The academic year 2017-18 was devoted to a series of lectures under the title Translating Structure/Structuring Translation, which brought three prominent academics working in and around translation studies to explore some of the ways the discipline intersects with other areas of academic inquiry. The academic year 2018-19 produced the symposium The International in a National programme (.pdf), which explored the role of translation in national evolution and at the same time examined translation as a methodological tool for studying the measure of the international in the national.
