Transnational Russian Studies

This symposium took place in Durham on 14-16 September 2017. Convened by Andy Byford (Durham University), Stephen Hutchings (University of Manchester) and Connor Doak (University of Bristol), it sought to open up the geopolitical map of 'Russian Studies' beyond 'Russia', in recognition that what constitutes 'Russia' and 'Russian culture' is thoroughly traversed by the transnational and the intercultural. The symposium foregrounded mobility, in the broadest of senses, as core to the production, circulation and reception of culture. It highlighted processes of cultural and linguistic (mis)translation in relation to a range of artistic forms, language practices, and modes of individual and collective agency.

Our overall ambition is to reposition 'Russian Studies' in a transnational framework. The symposium forms part of a book project which has resulted in the multi-authored book titled Transnational Russian Studies published by Liverpool University Press towards the end of 2019 as part of its Transnational Modern Languages Series.
