Centre for Leadership and Followership

Who leads, and who follows? Our centre aims to advance theory on leadership and communicate this knowledge to practitioners. We focus on the study of leadership and followership, as well as the intersection of this research with key organisational behaviour topics such as identity, trust, and social networks.

An important aspect of our centre is collaboration and mentorship. We supervise PhD students in this field, have events with renowned international speakers, and work in international collaborations—all for the purpose of advancing the study of leadership and followership.

July 2026

• Award: Work on leader imposterism by Susanne Braun and  Tim Holmes was nominated for the AOM Evidence-Based Leadership Development Award 2026 (MED Division).
• Funding: Olga Epitropaki and Susanne Braun successfully obtained a EU Horizon grant for their research project entitled "Interoperable Research Careers Intelligence And Knowledge Flows Across Sectors".
• Funding: Maria Kakarika was awarded an Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) for her project ‘Achieving Behavior Change For Sustainability Through Leadership In Barbados’.
• Award: Marisa Plater received a Best Reviewer Award from AOM (Public and Non-Profit division).
• Certification: Kiki Chalkiadaki completed the Academy of Management Review Bridge Reviewer Program.
• New Role: Anders Marstand has been promoted to Full Professor.

June 2026

• Recognition: “From Leader Impostorism to Leadership Growth: Navigating Two Islands”, by Susanne Braun and Timothy Holmes was selected as runner-up for the 2026 Evidence-Based Leadership Development Program (EBLDP) Award sponsored by The League of Leadership.
• Event: Seminar talk and workshop by Prof. Yasin Rofcanin (U. of Bath, UK) entitled "Leading with Playful Work Design: An Information-Processing Perspective" and "An Honest Conversation about Publishing in Top-Tier Journals".

May 2026

• Achievement: Tim Holmes has successfully passed his PhD viva with minor corrections and is now Dr Holmes.
• Recognition: Conference paper on "Leader-Follower Learning Imbalance and Leader Identity", by Anders Marstand, is a finalist for the 2026 Best Conference Paper with Practical Implications Award at the AOM (OB Division).
• Recognition: ‘Distant but close’: Leadership behaviours, psychological distance, employee coping and effectiveness in remote work contexts, by by Anders Marstand and Olga Epitropaki was recognized as a top viewed article by Wiley in 2025
• Event: Seminar talk and workshop by Prof. Steve Courtright (U. of Texas A&M, United States) entitled "Ask and Ye Shall Receive? Linking Leader Development Seeking to Developmental Opportunities" and "Practical Problematizing: From Gap Spotting to Finding Your 'Why'".

• Event: Seminar talk by Prof. Jingzhou pan (Tianjin University, China) entitled "Leadership in the Age of AI: Managerial Behavior and Follower Reactions".
• Achievement: Carolina Bysh has successfully passed her PhD viva with minor corrections and is now Dr Carolina Bysh.
• Award: Conference paper on Leader-Follower Learning Imbalance and Leader Identity by Anders Marstand was recognized among the top 10% best submissions of the Academy of Management Annual Meeting and included in the AOM Best Paper Proceedings.

• Event: Seminar talk and workshop by Prof. Denise Potosky (Penn State U., United States) entitled "Using AI Tools for Literature Reviews: Demonstrating Academic Integrity & Unlocking Research Productivity" and "Developing Researchers’ AI Literacy: Using AI Tools to Review Research".
