The Centre for Strategy, Technological Innovation, and Operations (CSTIO) is a research centre within Durham University Business School that integrates strategy, technological innovation, digital transformation, and operations management to address complex organisational and societal challenges.

Our distinctive strength lies in integrating three interconnected levels of analysis:

• Analytical and operational systems — optimisation, forecasting, AI, advanced analytics, logistics
• Firm-level strategy — business models, innovation, governance, international strategy
• Ecosystem transformation — sustainability, digitalisation, resilience, and grand challenges

Rather than treating strategy, technology, and operations as separate silos, CSTIO examines how they co-develop. We combine micro-level decision models with firm-level strategic choices and system-level transformation to understand how organisations compete, adapt, and create long-term value in turbulent environments.

Our research integrates advanced quantitative modelling, strategy and international business theory, digital systems and AI governance, and sustainability-oriented transformation. The result is analytically rigorous, practice-relevant work that informs managerial decision-making, shapes policy debates, and supports responsible technological and economic development.

CSTIO provides a platform for multidisciplinary collaboration around themes that matter — from operations research in practice and forecasting to digital transformation, circular systems, and strategic flexibility.
