Removing Social Class Barriers for the North East Creative Industry
A report created by eight representatives of the North East Creative Industry and Durham researchers highlights the sector's many challenges and opportunities and indicates that more needs to be done to leverage the full potential of a thriving industry.
A team of practitioners and researchers is working on addressing social class barriers in the North East Creative Industry. The North East Creative Industry holds significant potential for growth, yet persistent structural inequalities, opaque rules of value and limited career pathways hinder meaningful participation, particularly for individuals from diverse social class backgrounds.
Their research combined theoretical and practical insights through co-creation workshops with practitioners, academics and experts. By mapping the symbolic power of institutions, understanding the barriers of self-exclusion, and examining regional and digital inequities, we identified key principles of action: exposing hidden power structures, supporting career navigation, rebalancing power through accountability, and future-proofing creatives for the digital economy.
