All of our self-catered accommodation blocks are located on College grounds which means that they are a few minutes' walk to the College buildings such as the College Office, College Bar, Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and The Hub. Our premium accommodation offers a modern feel and is located approximately 1 mile from Durham City Centre and is a short walk to the main campus.
Our College accommodation is staffed 24/7 and has round the clock security.
Our College accommodation contains a total of 492 student bedrooms and 4 self contained flats for staff or visiting fellows. Most of the flats have 7/8 bedroom but there are a few smaller containing 5/6 bedrooms (mainly on the ground floor). All of the beds at John Snow are 3/4 size beds (half way between a single and a double bed).
Flats - 348 bedrooms (between 4-8 ensuite bedrooms per flat)
Townhouses - 144 bedrooms (12 bedrooms per townhouse (6 bathrooms)
Undergraduate Freshers will be accommodated in either an ensuite or Townhouse room. Our ensuite rooms are located in cluster flats (of between 5 and 8 bedrooms) in one of our six large accommodation blocks. Each Town houses contains 12 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms.
We usually plan to accommodation around 40 postgraduate Masters' student in College Townhouses. In each Townhouse there are 4 floors, 12 bedrooms and six bathrooms (each of which is dedicated for two named students to share). The large ground floor area includes a kitchen and dining space, and a comfortable living area.
We accommodate around 40 'returners' (2nd, 3rd and final year undergraduate students) in College each year within two of our townhouses and two of our larger flats. We particularly welcome returners back into College who make a contribution to the work of the JCR and to provide a balanced residential College community.
We try our best to allocate students with one of the following preferences in the same Flat or Townhouse. Where there is sufficient demand, we can create a dedicated Flat or Town House where all of the students living in it have the same preference.
Bedrooms are allocated based on the information provided in the accommodation application form. This form will be sent to applicants with their confirmation letter in August.
We offer both ensuite and shared bathrooms.
Students should state any food intolerances or food allergies on application for accommodation. If a student has a number of intolerances we are unlikely to be able meet their request, and will prioritise their 1st preference.
Kitchen cleans take place fortnightly, the dates are notified to students in advance for the term.
The service includes: wiping down kitchen hard surfaces, the exterior of white goods, vacuuming and mopping floors.
It does not include: removing rubbish, washing dishes, cleaning ovens, hobs or microwaves - these are the responsibility of the residents.
If housekeeping staff find a particularly dirty/untidy kitchen, they can allow the students 10 minutes to clear surfaces so that cleaning can take place, alternatively, if housekeeping staff are not able to carry out their duties due to extremely cluttered areas, this would be brought to the attention of the College accommodation officer and evidenced with photographs.
To note: The College is a non-smoking environment.
