Durham University Rent Guarantor Scheme

Durham University is now working with a leading provider of rent guarantor services to enable students to access private sector accommodation where a UK guarantor is required. Whilst many students will ask parents or other relatives to act as UK guarantor for their tenancy, this is not always an option for some, particularly overseas students.

Who are Housing Hand?

Housing Hand is the UK’s largest rent guarantor service and they guarantee thousands of tenancies across the UK. Housing Hand work directly with Universities, Landlords, Letting Agents and private Purpose Built Student Accommodation providers.

What does the partnership mean for students?

As a Durham University student, you can now access Housing Hand’s services at a specially negotiated rate that can be spread across monthly payments.

What should students do before applying to use the service?

Before applying to use the service, students and their parents / supporters may wish to visit Housing Hand’s Help Centre and Knowledge Base.

Students, and their parents/supporters, can find content here on rent guarantoring, eligibility, and cost as well as information on the Housing Hand Application process. It is useful to understand what is involved in the application process, including what types of information will be needed and the steps involved.

I need a rent guarantor but I am care-experienced / estranged /  a care-leaver – can I get any additional support?

Yes. If you are care-experienced / estranged / a care-leaver, you can still apply for the service but you can do so without the requirement of a co-signer. Provided you meet the Durham University EACE+ definitions you will be able to access Housing Hand’s service free of charge.

Housing Hand can also assist and guide you through the process.
