Durham Divas is the Cheer and Dance squad for Durham University students, and coming off the back of the most successful season in club history, are keen to continue the winning run this year with our five competitive teams: Blaze (Hip Hop), Blackout (level 3 cheer), Eclipse (level 2 cheer), Stardust (Pom) and Electra (lyrical). Galaxy, our performance team is also looking to build on last season, creating a high-standard and aesthetically stunning routine for sideline and showcase performance.
Competitive cheer routines are high-energy, and challenging, consisting of stunting, tumbling, jumps and dance, combining athleticism with performance for truly impressive displays. Experience in dance or cheer to try out for our competitive cheer teams is useful, but by no means necessary, as many Divas new to cheer last season ended up as National Grand Champs!
Pom dance incorporates fast upbeat jazzy, commercial dance styles with kicks, turns jumps and fast, strong arm movements using poms. Lyrical dance is a flowing, emotive style, with choreography combining floor work, leaps, turns and surging body movements. Hip Hop performances include powerful and high energy moves combining a range of street styles.
Our performance team doesn’t follow competition mark sheets, or levelled limits, so the routines are creative, advanced, and aesthetically impressive. Because of the high-level stunting involved, at least a year of cheer or gymnastics experience is required to try out for this team.
Cheer Love!
Eclipse (Level 2 Non-Tumble): 1st at FC Nationals, 1st at ICC Nationals and Judges Choice Grand Champions at ICC Nationals (highest score at the competition). Blackout (Level 3): 2nd at FC Nationals and 3rd at ICC Nationals. Stardust (Pom): 3rd at FC Nationals and 1st at ICC Nationals. Electra (Lyrical): 3rd at FC Nationals and 1st at ICC Nationals. Blaze (Hip Hop): New for the 24/25 season. Galaxy (Performance Cheer): Successful and full-on season with a highlight being the DUWAFC and DURFC charity matches.
