We are lucky to have Eddie as our coach here at Durham. He is a level 3 senior club coach and a 5th dan with a wealth of experience and knowledge. He is an accomplished judoka who has been involved in judo for over 50 years. Additionally, he is also a prolific writer, photographer and co-author of numerous books on judo and martial arts having collaborated with many top experts including Neil Adams (Grips and Tai-Otoshi), George Kerr (Modern Judo and My Journey to The Tenth Dan) and Roy Inman (Judo: The Skills of the Game).
Judo is a martial art originating from Japan and became an Olympic sport in 1964. Judo translates as the “gentle way”, with no kicks and punches, making it safer for its participants. Despite this, Judo focuses on grappling, throwing and ground techniques making it an effective and powerful form of self-defence.
Durham University Judo Club (DUJC) is a thriving club open to both students at the University and members of the public aged 16+. From complete novices (with no past experience of judo) to experienced competitors, anyone is welcome. Eddie Ferrie, lead coach, is a 5th Dan black belt and is a wealth of knowledge in all things Judo. DUJC train three times a week at Maiden Castle Dojo. Judo is a competitive club, each year competing in the BUCS Judo Championships, amongst others. Novices with no prior experience in Judo, joining in Term 1, have graded and gone on to compete successfully the very same year in such competitions. Although Judo is mainly an individual sport, the team have strong community spirit, making an effort to attend competitions together. Last year we had our first club tour where we travelled to Ireland as a group for a weekend spending time team building outside of the judo environment.
In the past year we have competed in many competitions as a club including the London Colleges and Universities, Sheffield University Kyu Grade Tournament, BUCS, Sheffield University International Student Teams and many more… As a club we are proud to have placed second overall at BUCS brining back five gold and a bronze in the individuals along with two selections to the European University Games in Hungary we also won a silver in the women’s team event (making Team Durham history). We strive to make club trips to competitions fun, welcoming and enjoyable especially to those new to the sport! The club offers the perfect environment to allow people to grow as judoka and achieve such high results.
