Collaboration

We have built a large network of national and international industrial partners involved in collaborative research through interactions at many levels with the Department.

Annually, we place some 20 4th year MChem students into industry (DuPont Teijin Films, Lucite, AstraZeneca, Roche, GSK) where links are facilitated and grown by Durham supervisor visits as part of the pastoral care and assessment processes.

Our industrial collaborative research portfolio is 17% of our total research income and many students have been part or fully funded by industrial partners, potentially leading to IPR submissions, knowledge transfer and industry process change leading to economic impact.

Consultancy and analytical services

Departmental expertise and infrastructure has provided significant impact to external organisations. Staff currently have individual consultancy contracts with 24 major companies. Our analytical services provide data and interpretation on, for example, solution state NMR, solid state NMR service, X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry and separation science.
