AI and Authorship: Who Owns Machine-Generated Knowledge?
Interdisciplinary Conversations on Intellectual Property & Research Practice
Artificial Intelligence
You are invited to a discussion on one of the biggest questions in modern research and IP law:
Who owns knowledge created by AI?
SESSION 1: AI and Authorship: Who Owns Machine-Generated Knowledge?
Monday 26 January
• 4:00–5:00 pm — Talk and discussion
• 5:00–5:30 pm — Refreshments and informal networking.
• TLC101
Speaker: Dr Cuong Nguyen, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham
Chair: Dr Van Anh Le, Durham Law School
About the session:
AI increasingly generates text, images, data, and inventions that shape research and innovation across disciplines. Bringing together legal and mathematical perspectives, the discussion will consider:
• Whether AI can meaningfully be described as an author or inventor;
• How current IP frameworks respond to machine-generated outputs; and
• Why these questions matter for researchers, postgraduates, and final-year students across disciplines.
Audience participation is encouraged.
Who should attend? Postgraduate researchers, PhD candidates, final-year LLB students, and colleagues from across the sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
Open to all members of the Durham University community. Refreshments will be provided.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Innovation and Ownership: Interdisciplinary Conversations on IP and Research Practice.
This project is a short interdisciplinary series of three sessions exploring how IP, authorship, and ownership shape contemporary research, innovation, and entrepreneurship at Durham University. It responds to growing interest among postgraduate researchers and colleagues across mathematics, philosophy, and the sciences, and aims to foster sustained collaboration between Durham Law School and other departments through structured, accessible discussions.
