MUSICONversations II: Prof. John Snijders introduces the music of Matthijs Vermeulen

MUSICONversations is a new series of music appreciation evenings in which members of Durham’s renowned Music Department introduce music they love and would like to share with a wider audience. Lafcadio Hearn project – Creating a world of expression

This concert features four pieces of music for piano and recitation, composed by four composers based on the works of Lafcadio Hearn. The texts used range from ghost stories to dialogues with a Bodhisattva, offering both fascinating and profound content.

Royal Northern Sinfonia III: Schubert and Haydn

For their final visit of the season, RNS bring two Viennese Classical masterworks to Durham. Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of our Saviour on the Cross, heard tonight in its well-known arrangement for string quartet, moves with reflective grace: a series of slow, searching movements inspired by the final phrases spoken by Jesus Christ on the cross.
