The Decolonial Working Group (DWG) in SGIA would like to invite all to a discussion around historical memory and the politics of decolonisation, featuring Alpa Shah (Oxford) and Rahul Rao (St Andrews). Both Shah and Rao are currently engaged with how decolonisation is taken up in contested ways, exploring the ways in which the language of decolonisation and historical memory become entangled with right-wing politics. Shah will contribute thoughts from her recent book, The Incarcerations: BK-16 and the Search for Democracy in India’ a finalist for the 2024 Orwell Prize for Political Writing, the 2025 Moore Human Rights Prize and the AutHER Non-Fiction Best Author Award of the Times of India. It is also a 2024 Book of the Year for the New Statesman, Hindustan Times and The Hindu. Rao will discuss his forthcoming book, The Psychic Lives of Statues Reckoning with the Rubble of Empire with Pluto Press, which Priyamvada Gopal, Professor of Postcolonial Studies at Cambridge calls, 'a powerfully grounded and eminently thoughtful contribution to debates around race, caste, class and historical memory'.
