Joint Project Launch - Durham and Tübingen

The meeting will begin with a talk by Dr Noam Leshem with Q&A, followed by a chance for all those present (in Tübingen and Durham) to present themselves briefly to the group and outline their research interests in the topic. There will then be a coffee break, following which there will be discussion about how the group will continue its activities.   

Dr Leshem’s research focuses on cultural belongings and the pitfalls of restitution. Specifically, he will touch on the deeply unequal relations that restitution of cultural heritage perpetuates. The question of belongings – of possession and return of cultural objects – is therefore deeply rooted in wider questions of justice: Who gets to set the terms of restitution? When does restitution simply serve to ease historical guilt rather than redress historical wrongs? What do more just restitution processes entail? 

However, the workshop is not limited to these questions. All aspects of the topic of “belonging” can be addressed. If your own research interests are related to the topic in one way or another, we would appreciate it if you could briefly present them at the workshop. Our aim is to identify possible synergies in joint research interests.
