Multidisciplinary approaches to building research capacity and resilience through partnerships during conflict

The Centre owes its foundation to Durham University’s the successful 2023-2024 UUKi-funded UK-Ukraine RI Twinning project ‘Multidisciplinary approaches to building research capacity and resilience through partnerships during conflict’. It was during this project’s implementation that the interdisciplinary potential for engaging with Ukraine at Durham was fully realised and appreciated. The project linked Durham University and its Ukrainian partner Zaporizhzhia National University (ZNU) in a comprehensive multidisciplinary agenda. The programme embedded shared interests in relation to the themes of strategic importance; supported colleagues at ZNU with time and safe space to focus on research through visiting fellowships; provided research training and capacity building opportunities for PhD students and staff; and identified and explored potential ongoing further avenues for research. Workshops have taken place at the Departments of History, Geography, Psychology, Finance, the Law School, the Business School and Biosciences, incorporating visiting staff fellowships for Ukrainian colleagues, as well as the involvement of UG and PGR students from both Durham and ZNU.
