More than 100 pupils and teachers from schools across the North East gathered at Durham University for a landmark climate action event. Organized by Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS UK) and supported by Durham Energy Institute, the initiative aimed to help schools develop Climate Action Plans (CAPs) in response to the UK Government’s call for all schools to cut emissions.

Workshops empowered students to take the lead in creating practical sustainability measures, from mapping habitats to introducing energy-saving initiatives. City of Durham MP Mary Foy praised the event, calling it “deeply encouraging” and pledging support for young people’s environmental efforts. Teachers and pupils left inspired, with many ready to implement CAPs in their schools.

The event underscores Durham University’s commitment to climate research and sustainability, with its experts actively contributing to global discussions at COP30 in Brazil.
