On 3rd September 2024, a team from DEI visited Ørsted at their East Coast Hub to celebrate the recent renewal of the DEI-Ørsted partnership and set the agenda for future research. The ongoing partnership brings together Ørsted’s leading industrial insight and intelligence with DEI’s research expertise.

Both DEI and Ørsted see innovation as central to the energy transition and the appointment of Professor Simone Abram as DEI Director in April 2024 provides an opportunity to embed social and cultural knowledge into wind energy research and development.

Potential future collaboration

The partnership focuses on a holistic approach to sustainability – incorporating environmental, economic and social considerations. This includes exploring different possible energy futures, and looking at how energy is governed and managed.

The discussions identified new areas for future collaborations, including promoting better environment protection, improving biodiversity, and greater consideration of the legal framework for renewable energy developments.

Developing the next generation of energy researchers

As part of this partnership, Ørsted offers annual bursaries to students on our Energy-related master’s programmes in:

This year saw many high calibre applications for the programmes commencing in October 2024.

In addition, Ørsted have funded numerous PhD students over a number of years, in the Department of Engineering and the Aura Centre for Doctoral Training in Offshore Wind Energy and the Environment. These activities support the visionary and world-leading research led by DEI.
