Member - Dr Ylli Dautaj

Dr Ylli Dautaj is an Associate Professor in Commercial Law and Commercial Arbitration at Durham Law School, UK. 

Ylli previously taught at various institutions in the UK, India, Sweden, and the US, including as a lecturer at Brunel University London, as a visiting associate professor at Penn State Dickinson Law, and as part of the international adjunct faculty of Uppsala University’s master programme in investment treaty arbitration. In 2024-25, Ylli was awarded an “Honoree for Teaching” from Penn State Dickinson Law, 2024-25, as well as the “Honorary Barrister” award.

Ylli has published numerous academic articles and books on commercial law, international arbitration, and public international law, including with Kluwer International, Manchester Journal of International Economic Law, Brill Research Perspectives, American Review of International Arbitration, The International Lawyer, Fordham International Law Journal, Cornell International Law Journal, and Dispute Resolution Journal. His scholarship has been cited in court, in the official commentary to the Swedish Arbitration Act, and by many leading scholars and practitioners. For his scholarship trajectory, Ylli was also awarded the “New Voices in Dispute Resolution” in 2024 from the AALS Section on Alternative Dispute Resolution, alongside the Stephen G. Goldberg ADR Scholar Award.

Ylli graduated with a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (UK) as a stipendiary scholar of the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities. 

Counsel experience: Represented individuals, corporations, State-owned entities, and sovereign States in litigation and arbitration; focused on investor protection, commercial transactions, energy, construction, and shareholder disputes and joint ventures; dealing with high-stakes and complex international arbitration and international litigation matters. Arbitration experience under inter alia FAI, SCC, PCA, UNCITRAL, ICC, LCIA, and ICSID Rules.

Expert experience: Written expert opinions on various issues of arbitration law, international economic law, commercial law (primarily CISG), and sovereign immunity, before arbitral tribunals and courts in multiple jurisdictions.
