To celebrate its 175th anniversary, the Geological Survey of India [https://www.gsi.gov.in/] is convening an international seminar entitled “Unearthing the Past, Shaping the Future”, which will take place in Jaipur on 20–21 November 2025. Professor Fausto Guzzetti has been invited to deliver a keynote lecture on “Capabilities and Challenges of Landslide Anticipation” as part of the seminar.
In his presentation, Professor Guzzetti explores the scope, advances, and challenges involved in anticipating landslides and their impacts over timescales ranging from hours to centuries, with particular emphasis on landslide populations—from single events to thousands triggered by one cause or by multiple events over long periods.
Drawing on literature reviews and on experience gained from mapping, modelling, and anticipating landslides in Italy over the past four decades, he begins by presenting methods for landslide detection and mapping, from traditional visual interpretation of aerial photographs to modern automated image analysis, and illustrates lessons learned from analysing detailed landslide inventory maps. He then examines empirical data and both consolidated and innovative modelling approaches—including machine learning—used for the spatial and temporal anticipation of landslides across periods from hours to decades. These include empirical, mechanistic, and data-driven models applied to predict the number, size, and distribution of landslides, highlighting their advantages, uncertainties, and limitations, as well as their potential practical applications.
Finally, he discusses methods for quantifying landslide risk to populations, including how demographic factors such as age and gender influence fatalities—crucial information for designing and implementing effective risk-reduction strategies. Professor Guzzetti concludes offering considerations for future research and for coping effectively with the risks posed by landslides in a changing world.
