Graham Earp Scholarship in Sustainability & IHRR Scholarship in Risk

Durham University is pleased to offer two prestigious donor‑funded scholarships for international postgraduate students beginning their studies in September 2026. These awards recognise academic excellence and support students committed to addressing the global challenges of sustainability, climate change, hazards, risk, security and politics.

Both scholarships are available to applicants to taught postgraduate programmes within the Department of Geography.

About the Scholarships

Graham Earp Scholarship in Sustainability

This scholarship supports students applying for:

  • MSc Cities and Sustainable Futures
  • MSc Climate Change, Environmental Processes and Sustainable Futures
  • MSc Climate Change, Society and Sustainable Futures

IHRR Scholarship in Risk

This scholarship supports students applying for:

  • MA/MSc Climate, Risk and Society
  • MA Risk, Security and Politics
  • MSc Environmental Hazards and Risk

Each award provides a £7,000 tuition fee discount. Up to three scholarships per scheme will be awarded.

Students may study full‑time or part‑time (in‑person) with entry in September 2026.

Who Can Apply

These scholarships are designed for motivated international applicants who demonstrate:

  • Strong academic achievement
  • A clear passion for sustainability or risk-related challenges
  • Potential for meaningful impact after completing their degree

Scholarships are available exclusively to new international (overseas-fee) students who meet all eligibility criteria.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for either scholarship, applicants must:

  • Have applied for one of the eligible in‑person MA/MSc programmes within the Department of Geography
  • Be starting their course in September 2026
  • Be classed as an overseas student for tuition fee purposes
  • Be self‑funded and not receiving any other scholarship, funding or sponsorship
  • Meet or exceed Durham University’s entry requirements for their chosen programme

Applicants must first submit a complete academic application, including all required supporting documents, via Durham’s online postgraduate application portal.

How to Apply

Apply for an eligible programme through the Durham Applicant Portal.

A student ID will be generated once your academic application is complete—this is required for the scholarship form.

You do not need to hold an offer before applying for the scholarship.
