Join us for a workshop on creating a digital replica of an existing object, suitable for people without any background in computer science, as well as providing worthwhile content for computing specialists. Come prepared for an eye-opening session! Part of the Durham Centre for Visual Arts and Culture (CVAC) Visual Methods Workshop Series 2024-25.

Digital Twins: Understanding 3D images and thinking of their methods of creation and reuse

This workshop aims to provide broad information about the 3D reconstruction process, the intangible objects it creates, and considerations for subsequent steps of making them physical.  The session is suitable for people without any background in computer science, but will also provide worthwhile interest and insights for computing specialists.

The workshop will be broken into four parts with a mix of lecturing and interactive activities.

  • First, the participants will receive a digestible explanation of the Computer Science approach to 3D reconstruction, considering different techniques, sensors, and the resultant models.
  • From this understanding, the session will put these concepts into practice with a hands-on reconstruction of small objects brought along by participants.
  • We will then briefly consider the role of 3D printing to produce a tangible replica.
  • To close, we will run a group-based co-design session to develop ideas for research collaborations using digital twins, consisting of an ideation and presentation phase.

We plan to make an audio recording of the co-design activity, and take some photographs - both of which will be anonymised and made available later.
