Biography

Dr Jacques joined Durham Law School in 2015, having previously taught at the University of Warwick, the LSE and Birkbeck. She holds two undergraduate degrees (SOAS and Birkbeck) as well as a Masters degree and a PhD in law (both LSE). She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Dr Jacques researches and teaches property law and theory. She is the module convenor for Trusts Law and co-convenes Trusts, Wealth and Justice in a Global Context. Her research focuses on critical approaches to trusts law and to private property, as well as on new applications of the trust in financial and commercial contexts. She is an expert in electronic money and payments law. 

Before joining academia, Dr Jacques worked in private practice as a consultant to the electronic money sector. She currently acts as Senior Legal Adviser to the Electronic Money Association, advising on legal issues in relation to electronic money, payments and cryptoassets. She has co-drafted the UK sectoral anti-money laundering guidance for the electronic money and cryptoasset sectors and continues to be involved in regulatory and legislative initiatives in this area at both UK and EU level. 

Research supervision

Dr Jacques welcomes PhD proposals in the areas of property theory, trusts law, the law of restitution, the regulation of electronic money and payments law. Research topics of her current students include privacy in the context of Central Bank Digital Currencies and unjust enrichment in the digital world.
