Overview
Our BSc in Health and Human Sciences focuses on the anthropology of health. The anthropology of health is an extremely broad subject overlapping with many others, including biology, psychology, sociology and public health.
As a student on our BSc Health and Human Sciences programme, you would study health and disease from both social and biological perspectives. Studying the anthropology of health allows you to investigate pressing questions about contemporary health issues, including health inequalities and reproductive choices.
Studying Health and Human Sciences allows you to investigate fundamental questions about health, while also equipping you with broader skills that are transferable to a number of professional contexts, including designing research, maintaining ethical standards and navigating cultural differences.
Our BSc Health and Human Sciences students come from a wide range of academic backgrounds - you do not need to have studied any scientific subjects at A-level (or equivalent).
Our Anthropology graduates go on to a wide range of professions including working in government, healthcare, finance, education, research, marketing, environmental sustainability and law. Many of our students also go on to postgraduate study, including in other subjects.

Durham University considers a wide variety of qualifications for admission. If you are unsure about any of the information below, please get in touch with us directly at North.America@durham.ac.uk - we're happy to help.
For 2025 entry, Durham has updated entry requirements for students attending a high school in the United States that does not offer an AP curriculum. For students attending a school that does not offer AP curriculum, we will consider honours courses or equivalent in place of APs. For students attending a school that has an AP curriculum, you will be expected to submit AP exams for admission.
Different degree programmes at Durham will require different exam scores.
- Check what the A-Level entry requirements are for your degree programme of choice. You can find this on the course page using our course database.
- Use the table below to see what the A-Level entry requirements are equivalent to for US applicants.
For students attending a school with AP curriculum
If your school offers AP curriculum, you will need to submit a minimum of two AP exam scores in order to meet the academic entry requirements for your degree programme of choice. Please note that you must sit and submit the examinations, we will not accept the course grade. If there is a specific subject required for admission, you must evidence this with an AP exam. For some programmes, one AP may be sufficient alongside two additional qualifications listed below.
A-Level requirement | Three APs | Two APs and one additional qualification |
A*A*A | Three AP test scores of: 5,5,5 | Two AP test scores of: 5,5 PLUS one of the following:

For students attending a school that does not offer AP curriculum
If your school does not offer AP courses, Durham will consider students who are completing the US High School Diploma with Honours courses. Please note that we will be using the information submitted by your school in the UCAS Reference to confirm that your school does not offer AP curriculum, and if your school does, you cannot be considered with Honours courses alone and will need to complete APs to be considered for admission.
If you are planning to apply via this pathway, you will need to ensure that you have achieved an overall GPA of 3.7, and you will need a minimum of 3 yearlong equivalent honours courses taken in grade 11 and grade 12 in order to be eligible for admission.
Please note: Some degree programmes have subject specific requirements. If you are applying to a programme with subject specific requirements and you are unsure if your honours course will meet the requirements, please contact us.

If you are currently completing an Associate's degree or Year 1 of a Bachelor's degree
If you are completing an Associate’s Degree or Year 1 of a Bachelor’s Degree, we can consider these for entry into Year 1 of a Bachelor’s Degree at Durham University.
If you are applying to a Degree Programme at Durham which has subject-specific entry requirements, these must still be met. We may require you to submit a curriculum overview, outlining the academic content covered within your Associate’s Degree / Bachelor’s Degree so we can determine whether it aligns with the subject-specific entry requirements. Typically, you will need to meet the A Level subject requirement with a yearlong equivalent course.
A-Level requirement | Associates degree | First Year of Bachelor’s degree |
A*A*A | CGPA: 3.8 | GPA: 3.8 |
A*AA | CGPA: 3.5 | GPA: 3.5 |

Subject specific requirements
- For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires A-level Mathematics, AP Calculus BC at grade 5 is required.
- For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires A-Level English, AP English Literature and Composition is required.
- For students wishing to gain entry to Music programmes, we recommend taking AP Music Theory.
- For students applying to any History programme, one History AP is required. Only one of the two/three APs needed can be fulfilled using a History AP.
- For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires GCSE Mathematics, SAT Reasoning Maths at 550+, ACT Maths at 21 or better, or a maths related AP course (e.g. Calculus AB or Statistics) with a score of 3 is mandatory.
For students applying with a High School Diploma and Honours courses where your school does not offer AP curriculum, you will need to have completed your school's equivalent of the above. If you are unsure if your curriculum meets the A Level requirements, please get in touch with us directly.
Important things to note regarding admission
- You do not have to have completed all AP's at the time of applying. We understand that many students will take AP's in their Senior year and we can assess these when the results are released.
- We do not accept the AP Capstone (comprising of AP Research and AP Seminar) in order to fulfil the conditions of an offer to study at Durham.
- Students using an Associate’s Degree or similar to apply still need to meet all A Level subject requirements where applicable. If you are unsure if your qualification will meet these requirements, please get in touch with us.
- If you are planning to use one year-long equivalent Dual Enrolment or College course, you need to have studied that subject for the equivalent of one full time year, e.g., across two semesters or three trimesters. For example, Psychology 101 and Psychology 102.
- We also accept SAT Subject Tests. If you have SAT Subject Test scores, please get in touch to see if this can reduce the number of other standardised tests required.

I discovered I had a particular passion for studying the ways in which human social systems influence health outcomes, both physically and psychologically. I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on the lived experiences of autistic women, and also did research on the socially-stratified effects of climate change on health and well-being. After graduating I pursued an MSc in Environmental Sustainability and worked at the Scottish Parliament, where I developed a strategic climate adaptation plan for the main Holyrood site. I found that my social anthropological research skills aided me in conducting effective and participatory stakeholder consultation. Today, I work as a sustainability analyst for a global consultancy, where I help clients to calculate, understand, and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions across their operations.

in The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025Studying Anthropology at Durham allows you to gain a deep understanding of humanity, helping to navigate the biggest challenges our societies face today.
Read moreRead lessAnthropology is the study of humanity, a very broad subject that overlaps with many others including history, politics, geography, psychology, sociology and biology. We are among the largest Anthropology departments in the UK, and one of the few to combine social, biological and medical aspects of anthropology. You can choose from one of three single-honours programmes or study Anthropology as a joint honours degree with Sociology, Psychology or Archaeology. This gives you the chance to explore humanity from multiple perspectives, from our evolutionary history to our present day diversity.
Our lecturers are passionate, dedicated teachers and researchers, and our modules span numerous topics including politics, economics, social organisation, health and disease, anatomy, culture, cognition, evolution and primatology.
Anthropology is a very practical subject, and our degrees place a strong emphasis on research skills, which are highly transferable to a number of professional contexts. Our students are trained in both qualitative and quantitative research methods and learn how to conduct research ethically and sensitively.
All of our Anthropology degrees can be combined with a placement year or studying abroad, which are great opportunities to broaden your horizons and supplement your anthropological training. Our students have the opportunity to study abroad both within Europe and further afield, and complete placement years in diverse workplaces, from financial institutions to prisons.
Facilities
We are based in the Dawson Building, conveniently located next to the main library, and close to lots of other departments and University services. We have a common room which students are welcome to use for studying and socialising. We also house a number of research centres and laboratories, including an Infancy and Sleep Centre, a Physical Activity Lab and an Ecology and Endocrinology Laboratory, which is equipped to analyse human samples.

Fieldwork opportunities
Fieldwork is at the heart of anthropology. We offer a residential fieldwork course at a choice of European destinations to all of our final year single-honours students* allowing you to put your anthropological training into practice. Here, students spend about a week conducting field based research such as surveys and interviews with guidance from experienced staff. Destinations vary, but have recently included Malta, Gibraltar, Fuerteventura, Greece and Cyprus. We also offer a virtual alternative to students who cannot or do not wish to travel for fieldwork, plus local field trips in the second year. * and most of our students on joint honours and other broader programmes too, apart from Psychology and Anthropology.
