The BSc Mathematics and Physics degree is designed for those seeking the mathematical rigour of theoretical physics and is led by discipline experts. Mathematics and Physics are closely interlinked subjects, with each providing many fascinating insights into the other. The course offers parallel tracks of theoretical physics delivered by the Physics Department and mathematical physics and applied mathematics options taught by the Mathematics Department.

The wide array of optional modules provides the flexibility to tailor your learning in line with your evolving interests. In addition, the common first year allows the option to transfer onto either the MSci Mathematics and Physics, BSc Mathematics, BSc Physics, or BSc Natural Sciences at the end of the first year.

Our BSc in Mathematics and Physics is a highly versatile qualification. Whether you want to work in finance, engineering, medical technology, renewable energy, space exploration or beyond, this degree is a step towards achieving your goal.

What you'll study

The first year lays the foundation in physics theory and the mathematical and laboratory skills that you will need to tackle more complex content in later years. As you progress through the course the level of theoretical content increases, extending your knowledge in areas such as electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, particle theory and advanced mathematical theory.

The final year includes a choice of project where you tackle a theoretical issue or an in-depth analysis of an applied problem. You can also choose to complete an interdisciplinary enterprise module. Whichever you choose, you will be using your newly acquired skills to investigate a relevant area of interest.

Core modules

builds on ideas of differentiation and integration in A level mathematics. The module begins with functions of a single variable before progressing to functions of several variables. Topics include methods of solving ordinary and partial differential equations, and an introduction to Taylor series, Fourier series and Fourier transforms.
presents mathematical ideas, techniques in linear algebra and develops the geometric intuition and familiarity with vector methods you will need for more challenging material later in the course.
aims to provide an understanding of real and complex number systems, and to rigorously develop the calculus of functions of a single variable from basic principles.
introduces classical aspects of wave phenomena and electromagnetism, as well as basic concepts in Newtonian mechanics, quantum mechanics, special relativity and optical physics.
provides a practical introduction to laboratory skills development with particular emphasis on measurement uncertainty, data analysis and written and oral communication skills. It also includes an introduction to programming.

Core modules

introduces the theory of complex analysis through the study of complex differentiation, conformal mappings, metric spaces, series and uniform convergence, contour integrals and calculus of residues, and applications.
provides an understanding of calculus in more than one dimension, together with an understanding of, and facility using, methods of vector calculus. It explores the application of these ideas to a range of forms of integration and to solutions of a range of classical partial differential equations.
develops your knowledge of quantum mechanics and electromagnetism. You will learn to apply the principles of physics to predictable and unpredictable problems and produce a well-structured solution, with clear reasoning and appropriate presentation.
extends your knowledge of thermodynamics, condensed matter physics and optics.
provides a mathematical appreciation of the conceptual framework of classical and quantum physics by following the development of mechanics after Newton's laws to the introduction of quantum mechanics. You can choose this or Theoretical Physics 2.
from a physics perspective develops an appreciation of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of classical mechanics; an ability to describe the rotational motion of a rigid body; describes elements of quantum mechanics in a rigorous mathematical way and manipulates them at the operator level. You can choose this or Methods of Mathematical Physics 2.

In your final year, you'll explore Mathematical Physics, analyze a practical problem, or join the Science Enterprise module to develop a research funding proposal. This Capstone module enhances planning, research, and presentation skills, allowing you to investigate a topic in-depth and showcase your findings.
3A further develops your knowledge to include quantum mechanics, and nuclear and particle physics. You will learn to apply the principles of physics to complex problems and produce a well-structured solution, with clear reasoning and appropriate presentation.

Learning

Our diverse teaching methods support learning and include lectures, tutorials, problem classes, homework problems, written and oral presentations and individual projects. Laboratory classes in Year 1 give you the chance to plan experiments, interpret data, and provide a sound basis upon which to ground your theoretical understanding and problem-solving abilities. Questions may be set in lectures and form the topic of discussion in tutorials or problem classes. We place great emphasis on high-quality small-group teaching, one-on-one attention from your academic advisors in each discipline, self-directed learning to develop your critical thinking skills, and collaborative working with other students.

An advanced project in a chosen topic under academic staff supervision may result in a significant piece of independent work.

Assessment

The majority of modules are assessed entirely through examination with others including an element of coursework (which may involve problem solving exercises, written reports, practical work and assignments).

The final-year Capstone Module is an opportunity to bring your prior learning to a subject of your choice or to engage in group work on developing an entrepreneurial idea.

Additional pathway

Students can apply to be transferred onto either the with Year Abroad or with Placement pathway during the second year.

Places on these pathways are in high demand and if you are chosen your studies will extend from three years to four.

For 2025 entry, Durham has updated entry requirements for students attending a high school in the United States that does not offer an AP curriculum. For students attending a school that does not offer AP curriculum, we will consider honours courses or equivalent in place of APs. For students attending a school that has an AP curriculum, you will be expected to submit AP exams for admission.

Different degree programmes at Durham will require different exam scores.

Please note that we will be using the information submitted by your school in the UCAS Reference to confirm that your school does not offer AP curriculum, and if your school does, you cannot be considered with Honours courses alone and will need to complete APs to be considered for admission.

If you are planning to apply via this pathway, you will need to ensure that you have achieved an overall GPA of 3.7, and you will need a minimum of 3 yearlong equivalent honours courses taken in grade 11 and grade 12 in order to be eligible for admission.

If you are completing an Associate’s Degree or Year 1 of a Bachelor’s Degree, we can consider these for entry into Year 1 of a Bachelor’s Degree at Durham University.

If you are applying to a Degree Programme at Durham which has subject-specific entry requirements, these must still be met. We may require you to submit a curriculum overview, outlining the academic content covered within your Associate’s Degree / Bachelor’s Degree so we can determine whether it aligns with the subject-specific entry requirements. Typically, you will need to meet the A Level subject requirement with a yearlong equivalent course.

Subject specific requirements

For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires A-level Mathematics, AP Calculus BC at grade 5 is required.
For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires A-Level English, AP English Literature and Composition is required.
For students wishing to gain entry to Music programmes, we recommend taking AP Music Theory.
For students applying to any History programme, one History AP is required. Only one of the two/three APs needed can be fulfilled using a History AP.
For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires GCSE Mathematics, SAT Reasoning Maths at 550+, ACT Maths at 21 or better, or a maths related AP course (e.g. Calculus AB or Statistics) with a score of 3 is mandatory.

For students applying with a High School Diploma and Honours courses where your school does not offer AP curriculum, you will need to have completed your school's equivalent of the above. If you are unsure if your curriculum meets the A Level requirements, please get in touch with us directly.

Important things to note regarding admission

You do not have to have completed all AP's at the time of applying. We understand that many students will take AP's in their Senior year and we can assess these when the results are released.
We do not accept the AP Capstone (comprising of AP Research and AP Seminar) in order to fulfil the conditions of an offer to study at Durham.
Students using an Associate’s Degree or similar to apply still need to meet all A Level subject requirements where applicable. If you are unsure if your qualification will meet these requirements, please get in touch with us.
If you are planning to use one year-long equivalent Dual Enrolment or College course, you need to have studied that subject for the equivalent of one full time year, e.g., across two semesters or three trimesters. For example, Psychology 101 and Psychology 102.
We also accept SAT Subject Tests. If you have SAT Subject Test scores, please get in touch to see if this can reduce the number of other standardised tests required.

Natural Sciences is a challenging and rewarding choice for science students who wish to study more than one subject.

Real-world challenges often require multidisciplinary solutions. Our Natural Sciences degrees allow students to combine either traditional Joint Honours degrees or transcend traditional subject boundaries, bringing together a range of ideas and disciplinary perspectives.

You can study for a BSc or MSci. Both qualifications allow you to major in at least one science subject: Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth Sciences; Mathematics; Physics; and Psychology; combining this with studying a second science discipline or one of: Anthropology; Business; Economics; Education; Geography; Philosophy or Sport & Exercise Sciences.

You can focus on two subjects from the outset or choose a broader range of modules across three or four subjects. These highly flexible courses include the opportunity to undertake a year abroad or a placement year, to develop additional skills and enjoy new experiences.
