The Brian Cooper Scholarship Fund

The Brian Cooper Scholarship Fund will provide an annual scholarship to a local student in need of financial assistance. This scholarship is available thanks to a very generous donation by the family of Brian Cooper and will enable Durham University to award at least one £13,000 scholarship for several years.

This Scholarship complements the existing work that the University is undertaking to attract talented students from the region to study at Durham.

Amount £13,000 per academic year which contributes to:
  • tuition fees
  • living costs
  • other associated costs of study

Eligibility

Applicant must:

  • have a household income level below £42,875 as assessed by Student Finance

  • be resident in County Durham, at the point of submitting an academic application through UCAS for a place at Durham University, with preference being given to residents of the East of Durham. Residence in the East of County Durham is defined as residing in one of the following postcode regions: DH4, DH5, DH6, SR7, SR8, TS27, TS28 and TS29

  • be educated at a state-maintained school, college or another secondary education provider

How to apply

  1. Complete a scholarship application

    Submit an academic application to Durham University by the UCAS deadline of 21st March 2024 and a scholarship application by the deadline including a personal statement describing:

    • your financial circumstances
    • how the Brian Cooper Scholarship would help you to study at Durham University
    • why you want to study at Durham University

  2. Submit a character reference

    Submit a character reference by the application deadline of 21st March 2024.

     

    This should be from one of your teachers in support of your scholarship application. Send by email to scholarship.application@durham.ac.uk.

     

    Please ensure your referee submits the reference on letter headed paper which contains:

    • their name
    • position (e.g. teacher or employer)
    • contact details
    • the name of the scholarship you are applying for
    • your full name

  3. Confirm your funding

    Please provide a copy of your Student Finance England confirmation of funding letter once received to scholarship.application@durham.ac.uk.

  4. Selection process

    All eligible applications will be considered on the basis of their personal statements, reference and academic status.

    Other scholarship awards may be taken into account when considering the allocation of the scholarship (e.g. if you are eligible, you can apply for both the Brian Cooper Scholarship and the Robert Young Scholarship, however you can only hold one of the awards).
