MA Philosophy

The one-year MA (two years part-time) provides an ideal academic environment for those who would like to study philosophy at a higher level. The programme provides deep training in philosophical skills such as critical analysis, which are attractive to employers and linked to higher salaries. It is also excellent preparation for a Ph.D, and many of our MA students go on to further study.

Each year, there is a very broad choice of modules to choose from, which are taught via group seminars and one-to-one tutorials. Our staff members have expertise in a very wide range of research areas, so there is also considerable freedom over choice of dissertation topic. In addition to these modules, there are MA student-led work-in-progress seminars. The programme director Dr Ben Smith, and deputy director Professor Matthew Tugby are in contact with students throughout the year and are always available to discuss any issues which might arise.

MA students also benefit from a range of other activities in the department, including the department’s postgraduate philosophy society (EIDOS), weekly and reading groups, as well as conferences, workshops and Royal Institute of Philosophy lectures.

“Completing the taught MA in Philosophy in Durham has proven tremendously valuable to me. I began a professional career after finishing the MA and have often benefited from the rigorous approach to thinking that is emphasised on the programme. The programme teaches both independent and collaborative learning and focuses on developing critical faculties. All of which has stood me in good stead in my chosen career. The course was stimulating and engaging; led by expert staff, with a broad and well-designed syllabus and with highly motivated peers. I recommend it.”
