Research in the Chemistry Department
Durham Chemistry is a world leading research department working on the biggest cross cutting issues with national, regional, and international partners. Our vision is to drive world-leading and world-changing research outputs in our three focussed research sections:
We also deliver societal impact through our research, our links with industry, our links with the region and through the students we graduate.

Research Sections
Our Research Sections allow us to focus efforts in high impact research outputs in three interdisciplinary grand challenge areas:
Chemistry for Sustainability encompasses a variety of research tackling some of the most crucial issues facing society: the need for renewable energy production, transformation, use and storage; the need for a net-zero carbon society; the wider need for a circular economy; the need to feed the growing global population; and the impact that element, water or feedstock scarcity will have on chemical processes and society.
Chemistry for Health will deliver solutions to society’s second major challenge – the health and quality of life of the general population. We will contribute through the synthesis of new candidate drug molecules, through the design and development of novel diagnostics, instruments and sensors, and through novel molecules and formulations for the targeted delivery of consumer products.
Chemistry for Change captures other areas where our research will have positive impact on technology, on knowledge and on chemistry and related academic disciplines. Examples include delivering new molecules and materials with novel physical properties, new analytical or methodology advances, or new computational or data analysis methods that can be applied across the chemical, life and physical sciences.
Services and Equipment
We offer a wide range of services supported by world leading equipment and lead by a multi disciplinary team of highly skilled technical staff. We work with academics, industry, government stakeholders and more to support their research needs.
You can find out more about our services and obtain a quote through looking at the dedicated services section. If you've got any questions then don't hesitate to email any member of the technical team who will be happy to help you in any way they can.
