Supporting and measuring success in interdisciplinary science research at Durham University
- Our Science Transformation Programme (STP) is a strategic initiative at Durham University designed to strengthen our position as a globally recognised leader in scientific research and education. This programme builds on our rich heritage and excellence in fundamental science to advance interdisciplinary, translational research that addresses critical global challenges. Through STP, Durham has set targets for our development of interdisciplinary science to deliver a doubling of the size of an average research grant and increase research income in the Faculty to the Russell Group median by 2032.
- Interdisciplinary Grant Success: We actively track and support funding applications that involve cross-disciplinary teams, recognising that successful bids are indicative of robust interdisciplinary collaboration. For instance, our research development and Research & Innovation Services teams provide strategic support for grant applications that span multiple disciplines, ensuring a cohesive and well-resourced approach to interdisciplinary research.
- Formation of Interdisciplinary Research Institutes: The establishment of research institutes and centres, such as the Biophysical Sciences Institute and the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing, among others, serves as a testament to our commitment to interdisciplinary research. These institutes provide platforms for collaborative research across various disciplines, fostering innovation and addressing complex global challenges.
- Recognition of Interdisciplinary Research Processes: We celebrate not only the outcomes but also the processes of interdisciplinary research. Building teams towards grant applications and supporting collaborative efforts are acknowledged as integral components of research success.
- Designated support towards Interdisciplinary Science Research: Each Research Institute benefits from dedicated administrative staff and teams focused on fostering a collaborative environment that drives success in interdisciplinary science research. At both departmental and faculty levels, Senior Research Administrators, working in close partnership with colleagues in the Research & Innovation Services team, provide ongoing administrative support specifically designed to enable and facilitate interdisciplinary science research across applicable disciplines.
