Ailsa Dixon (1932–2017), who studied music at Durham’s Music Department and St Mary’s College in the 1950s, is one of the many women composers who have been side-lined in musical history. Only a handful of her works were performed in her lifetime, until in 2017 her anthem These Things Shall Be was chosen for premiere as part of a project to highlight the work of female composers.

To mark International Women’s Day 2024, the Music Department and St Mary’s College host a concert to continue the revival of her music.

Durham University Keyboard Instrument Society and Chamber Music Society join forces for the most wide-ranging programme of Ailsa Dixon’s works ever to be performed in a single concert. Many of these works were still in manuscript, and some will be premieres. The event will include a discussion of Ailsa’s music with her daughter Josie Dixon.
Includes free refreshments.
The concert forms part of a series of events hosted by the Music Department, with partners across Durham University, to mark International Women’s Day 2024.
