Picture of Durham Finance Alumni

My name is George El-Haddad, and I am a Strategy Consultant at Accenture, based in the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. In my role, I specialize in innovative digital projects, ranging from data, technology, and AI-driven solutions, collaborating with government entities across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and multiple industries to drive transformative change.

Why did you decide to study at Durham University?

I chose Durham University for several reasons:

  1. Academic Excellence: Durham consistently ranks among the top universities in the UK and globally, making it a highly attractive option
  2. The Collegiate System: This was something unique that I had not experienced before. The sense of community and close-knit environment fostered through the college system is something you do not often find in universities, especially in urban campuses
  3. The Student Life: Durham’s campus is lively, with a significant portion of the city's population being students, creating a vibrant atmosphere
  4. Global Network: Durham offers a global network, which is a huge asset. The close residential collegiate system made it easier to build lasting relationships with students from all over the world

Tell us about your career path since graduation from Durham University?

After graduating in January 2017, I decided to stay in Europe and explore new opportunities. I secured a role in management consulting in Paris, where I spent around five years working with diverse clients and projects. In 2021, I felt ready for a new challenge, which led me to the UAE, where I joined Accenture. The transition allowed me to apply my consulting skills in a different part of the world, while also gaining exposure to the exciting and rapidly changing landscape of the GCC.

What motivated you to choose your current/future field or industry?

Three key factors drew me to consulting:

  • The Human Interaction: We are constantly working in teams and closely with clients, which keeps the work dynamic and engaging
  • The Diversity of Projects: No two projects are the same, which ensures that I am always learning and adapting
  • The Learning Curve: The fast pace and depth of the work challenge you to keep growing professionally

What do you find most rewarding and challenging about your current role?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is the opportunity to learn about new topics and industries on a regular basis. Every project presents an opportunity to broaden my expertise. On the other hand, the most challenging part is the need to quickly become proficient in these new areas. Clients often expect us to be experts in their fields, so there is constant pressure to rapidly absorb knowledge and deliver value.

What skills or qualities do you think are most important for success in this field?

Success in consulting hinges on two core skills; analytical ability and interpersonal skills. Being able to dissect complex problems and derive insights is essential, but equally important is the ability to communicate effectively, build relationships, and collaborate with both clients and colleagues. If you excel in both areas, you’re well on your way to success.

Any interesting stories you would like to share from your time at Durham?

One of my favourite memories was participating in the collegiate football tournament. It brought back a lot of nostalgia from my high school days when we played inter-class tournaments. Beyond the ups and downs on the pitch, what I appreciated most was the camaraderie that developed off the field. The shared experiences and bonding made it truly special.

Is there anything that you know now that you wish you’d known when graduating?

I wish I had understood the balance between planning and adaptability. When I graduated with a Master of Science in Finance focused on M&A, I expected a clear path in finance. However, careers are rarely linear. While planning is important, it is essential not to be too rigid, things often do not go as planned. Being open to new experiences and adapting to unexpected opportunities can significantly shape your journey. Today, I am consulting on tech-heavy topics, something I never imagined back then. So, do not be too harsh on yourself, and enjoy the ride.
