Delivered fully online, in a part-time study format, our new MSc in Accounting Analytics and Sustainability (MAAS) is an executive-level programme, specifically designed for accounting and auditing professionals, or those interested in developing their data analytics and sustainability knowledge, skills and capabilities in the area of accounting.

Offering great flexibility, the study programme has been created to allow you to continue in full-time employment, enabling you to achieve your personal and career aspirations, whilst also contributing to your CPD obligations. You can tailor your study journey through the MSc Accounting Analytics and Sustainability programme, opting to complete the full four-year programme for the MSc qualification, or, depending on your circumstances, exit earlier with a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma.

Delivered in three phases over 48 months, you will need to study and successfully complete the modules in each phase, before advancing to the next:

You will enhance your awareness of technology, data analytics, ML and AI in the related fields of accounting and auditing, while improving your analytical skills and knowledge in sustainability, integrated reporting, and ESG areas, including ESG investment ratings and assurance analytics.

The programme is delivered by Durham University Business School, accredited by the AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS, and recognised for its academic rigor and commitment to excellence. You will learn from an outstanding academic team, world-class experts in their fields, which is reflected in their research, innovation and teaching.

Course structure

Modules have been designed on this innovative new programme as a blend of academic knowledge, research and practitioner insight. You will study analytics within the context of accounting and be able to link to the various sustainability issues that affect organisational survival. Additionally, the programme provides hands-on experience in developing an analytical mindset, data interpretation, and insights development skills, alongside improving your technology and sustainability literacy.

The programme also offers a unique opportunity to build knowledge and skills in the high-demand areas of digitalisation and sustainability, giving you confidence in the level of quality of the service you’ll provide.

The full study programme is delivered in three phases over 48 months:

Phase 1 - Postgraduate Certificate in Accounting Analytics & SustainabilityTo achieve the PG Certificate level you will study:

  • Introduction to Data Analytics & Visualisation
  • Sustainability & Ethics
  • Introduction to Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence
  • Sustainability & Integrated Reporting

Phase 2 – Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting Analytics & Sustainability To achieve the PG Diploma, you will need to successfully complete Phase 1, then you will study:

  • Natural Language Processing & Textual Analytics
  • Sustainability Assurance Analytics
  • Robotic Process Automation
  • Research Methods & Design

Phase 3 – MSc Accounting Analytics & Sustainability To achieve the MSc you will need to successfully complete Phases 1 and 2, then you will study:

  • Research Project

Learning

Each module will run over a semester of 10 weeks and will be delivered through a combination of pre-recorded materials and live weekly webinars which will be recorded and shared. Given the part-time structure and the expectation that most students will be in full-time employment whilst studying, you will complete one 15-credit module per semester.

The January – March semester has been left free due to the peak workload within the accounting profession.

You will have cloud-based access to essential software such as Tableau (for visualisation), Excel, STATA, R, MATLAB and Python (for analytics). The programme incorporates contemporary case studies and extensive databases like Reuters, DataStream, WRDS, Refinitiv, and the EY Academic Portal to support your summative and formative assessments, all of which are submitted online.

A detailed study plan for each module will be provided in advance, signposting you to weekly materials, required data software, and the self-learning assessments.

At the final stage, you will complete a practice-based Research Project to be awarded a Masters degree. The project will be based on an important business issue or opportunity for development, where you can apply your learning to your organisation's real-life example. You’ll be supervised by an academic from the Business School, who has specialist knowledge and expertise in these topics.

Assessment

The course will be assessed based on a selection of projects, case studies, or a reflective journal, depending on the learning outcomes and nature of each module. All assessments will be submitted online and feedback will be provided electronically.

Entry requirements

The MSc Accounting Analytics and Sustainability programme has been specifically designed for accounting or other professionals interested in developing their data analytics and sustainability knowledge, skills and capabilities in the area of accounting.

What do you need to apply?

  • An upper second-class Bachelor Degree, or a recognised professional accounting qualification, or equivalent.
  • Lack of formal qualifications is not necessarily a barrier to admission. In such cases, we may ask the candidate to submit a portfolio of evidence demonstrating capability in areas such as your management experience, including critical thinking skills and communication skills.
  • English language requirements, for applicants whose first language is not English:
    • IELTS score of 7.0 or above, with no element below 6.0 OR
    • TOEFL IBT score of 102 or above, with no element below 23.
    • Further details can be found at Direct Entry Band C - Durham University. Where applicants use both written and spoken English in their daily work, we may be able to accept an employer letter confirming this as an alternative to a formal language test.
