Regulation and Standards

Code accreditation
All University-managed accommodation advertised on this website is accredited under the UUK/GuildHE Student Accommodation Code of Practice.

You can view the approved Code of Practice here:

Room Types and Availability

Not all room types are available at every college. The range of accommodation offered varies depending on the design and location of each college’s residences. The tables below explain our room types and show which room types are available at each college, to help you understand the overall mix of accommodation across the University.

Room availability can vary by college, site, and academic year. While you are invited to express preferences as part of the application process, submitting preferences does not guarantee allocation to a particular college, site, or room type. Allocations are made based on availability and the published allocation criteria.

Some colleges have accommodation across multiple sites. Students apply for accommodation at college level, and allocation to a particular site or building depends on availability and operational requirements.

Catered Colleges

In instances where accommodation is catered, the catering charge will be added to the residence charge for the full accommodation charge.

Catering is provided in Colleges for 31 weeks during the academic year. Most students will only access the core 29 weeks of term plus either welcome week for freshers or congregation week for finalists.

The core 30 weeks provides a weekly catering charge of £107.11. There are 21 meals per week provided which equates to £5.10 per meal.

Other University Accommodation

Recognised (independent) Colleges

The two recognised Colleges, St Chad's College and St John's College, operate their accommodation independently of the University. Residence charges, periods of occupancy and catering may slightly differ from those published below. You should check directly with these Colleges for the most up to date information on their accommodation options.

Purpose Built Partner Accommodation

The University sometimes leases high quality accommodation in purpose built blocks in Durham City. This can be due to high student demand or when planned refurbishment programmes mean some of our College accommodation is unavailable for part or all of the academic year. The price of this accommodation can vary slightly, but the University will ensure that the charge for this accommodation will not exceed that of a similar facility and standard offered in College accommodation.

Accommodation Pricing

Accommodation charges are based on the type of room, catering provision, and length of occupation. Prices are set consistently across the University, meaning that the same room type for the same length of stay is charged at the same rate, regardless of which college it is located in.

For example, an en-suite room offered for a 39-week contract is priced the same across all colleges where that room type is available. This approach ensures that accommodation pricing is fair, transparent, and consistent, while reflecting the features of the room and the services provided.

Accommodation Charges for Undergraduate Students with Non-Standard Dates

Undergraduate students who start their studies outside the University’s main September intake, or who are accommodated for only part of the academic year, are charged in accordance with the Miscellaneous Residence Charges.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • exchange students,
  • visiting students, and

  • students undertaking programmes at Durham under the Erasmus scheme.

Where a student is accommodated in a catered college, the weekly catering charge will also apply and will be calculated on a pro rata basis, reflecting the length of their period of residence.

New Undergraduate Residence Charges 2026/27

New undergraduate accommodation offers, with limited exceptions, cover a 39-week period from 26 September to 26 June. International arrivals begin on 23 Sept and include an additional charge for three extra nights (this is not included in the below).
