Welcome to Stephenson College
In the words of George Stephenson, we hope that every Stephenson student will, at some time and in their own way, ‘astonish the world’.
As one of youngest colleges in Durham, we mix the best University traditions with new ideas to do things the Stephenson way. It’s our students’ intellectual curiosity and innovation that make it a unique place to be.
We’re a self-catered college, but still love dining as a community and we’re the only college that holds Semi-formal ‘Locomotion’ Dinners where we can eat in a relaxed setting. We also host Formal Dinners and have special events throughout the year like the Summer and Winter Balls and Stevo Day where our whole community comes together in celebration.
Stephenson students are vibrant, inventive and inclusive. We have many sports clubs (from rugby to cheerleading) and societies (from the Rocket Theatre to FemSoc). There is a place for everyone. But if you think we’re missing something, we’ll help you set it up.
Platform 2 is our social hub, so whether you want to enjoy live theatre, play pool or relax with friends in front of a film, this is the space to do it. Platform 3 and Heighington are our dedicated study spaces, and we have a host of indoor and outdoor facilities, all set in calm green surroundings on the land of a former farm. Just make sure you save time to grab a coffee and lunch at Platform 1.
Our Connections Programme is your personal enrichment opportunity. From leadership to volunteering, we provide you with the access and support to develop as active global citizens.
Whatever your passion, Stephenson is the place to pursue it.
