Following on from the huge success of the Durham BFI Careers Week, we are delighted to bring this training aimed at students who are serious about a career in film and television.

Richard Knight is a highly experienced location manager in the film and television industry. Past credits include feature films such as the BAFTA winning This is England, Dead Man's Shoes, Four Lions and Everybody's Talking About Jamie, and drama series including Silent Witness, The Virtues and Utopia. Richard worked for eleven years at Screen Yorkshire in both an advocacy and a teaching role where he helped to find, train and mentor the screen industry talent of the future. Richard continues to teach on a freelance basis between his front line industry roles.

Over the course of six hours Richard will provide key essential tools and information for students are who about to embark on their careers in film/tv production post-graduation.

The course provides honest, practical information designed and delivered by an industry expert. Students will also be supplied with a list of resources for further reading.

 

This event will take place on both March 11 and March 18.  AVAILABLE TO DURHAM STUDENTS ONLY

 

Training Content

  1. An introduction to working in the UK Film & Television Industry: this session will look at what kinds of production are currently being made in the UK and where, with a particular emphasis on emerging trends in a fast-changing industry.

  2. CV Workshop: how to write an industry-standard CV and how to make the most of your experience and life skills to date.

  3. Jobs. Where to find jobs, which jobs to apply for and how to write a good approach email.  Optional homework between sessions will be to write an approach email for a hypothetical job role, with feedback provided by Richard the following week.

  4. How all the departments on a film work together to create a scene. A fun session taking a scene from a film and looking at the work of each department to create the finished piece, and how a typical day on a film set works.

  5. How to be a stand-out employee.  A series of top tips covering everything from etiquette, safety, discretion, do’s and don’ts etc, with the aim of getting you as well-prepared as possible for the world of work.

  6. Industry life.  A final session covering industry life, potential career paths, work-life balance, rates of pay and finance management with a particular emphasis on the early career stages.
