British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Durham University

Due to the volume of applications received, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities holds an internal competition to select applications for support through to the full competition.

In advance of the British Academy’s annual call for applications (which will open on the 1st of July) prospective candidates are encouraged to contact their target department and find a suitable mentor.  

Candidates are required to check their eligibility for the scheme before applying.

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Department of English Studies

The Department of English Studies invites expressions of interest through the year from outstanding candidates who wish to apply for a prestigious British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship through Durham University.

We welcome enquiries from eligible candidates particularly those related to the research themes in the department, or to relevant University Research Centres and Institutes (Institutes and Centres - Durham University). Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in the University. 

For the internal competition candidates are asked to secure a mentor in the Department/School to support their application. They should submit an expression of interest (i.e., an up-to-date CV and 1 A4 page summary of the research proposal) to the mentor by 12 noon, Monday 3 August 2026.  

Working with their mentor, candidates will be required to complete and return Durham University’s internal application form, available via the Arts and Humanities Research Team (artsandhumanities.researchteam@durham.ac.uk) by 12 noon, Friday 7 August 2026.
