Dr Mohammad Hedayati Kakhki

Visiting Professor

Dr Hedayati Kakhki is an attorney-at-law and a visiting professor at Durham University. He graduated from the University of Shahid Beheshti in Tehran with a Bachelor’s Degree in Judicial Law (1990) and a Master’s in International Law from the University of Shiraz (1997). He then completed a PhD in International Politics and Law at Durham University (2008) and has been teaching in the Law School on a part time basis since 2010; Mohammad leads the LLM in the International Law of Oil and Gas Contracts. He was the co-founder and acting Associate Director (2011-2014) of the Islam Law and Modernity Research group at Durham Law School, with a focus on the interaction between Islamic and Western systems of law. Mohammad is a member of the editorial board for the Manchester Journal of Transnational Islamic Law & Practice (MJTILP). His research interests include cross-jurisdictional legal issues, comparative criminal law, and legislative reform in the Middle East. 

In practice, Mohammad has been a member of the Iranian Bar Association since 1998 and is a SRA registered foreign lawyer in the UK. He has also worked as a country expert for around two decades, providing advice and opinion on Iranian/Islamic law and procedure to courts and tribunals as well as government departments, NGOs, charities, etc.
