Durham Law School Summer Course on International Arbitration 
21-25 July 2025

The Durham Law School Summer Course on International Arbitration that was a huge success in its inaugural year in 2022, in 2023 and 2024. The Durham Law School Summer Course returns for 2025!

This course is for: 

• Those seeking to expand their skillset or discover a new field of practice.
• Scholars seeking to gain expertise in the application of concepts and norms within the field of international arbitration.
• Students seeking exposure to international dispute resolution.

Course information

The course is taught by leading practitioners and arbitrators from around the world, with the goal of providing students a diverse perspective of international arbitration from various legal cultures and national backgrounds.

The four course co-directors include current arbitrators, practitioners and academics with a combined 100 years of experience in international commercial and investment treaty arbitration with leading global law firms.

The Durham Summer Course on International Arbitration welcomes both undergraduate and postgraduate students from any university, as well as professionals with an interest in the subject matter. 

John Fellas
	Over 30 years dispute resolution experience at a major law firm in New York City. Recognised by Best Lawyers as the Lawyer of Year for Commercial International in New York in 2019 and Lawyer of Year for Governmental International Arbitration in New York in 2022. Dunelm, B.A. Law (Hons.) 1983 International arbitrator and arbitration counsel.

 

Wendy Miles KC
	Over 25 years’ arbitration experience, both commercial and investment. Member of the ICC Court of Arbitration for over a decade.  Appointed by the United Kingdom to the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators and ICSID Panel of Conciliators Canterbury, B.A. LL.B, NZ (1994), LLM (First), NZ, 1998.

 

Christian Leathley
	Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills LLP (New York). Former Adjunct Professor at New York University School of Law and University of Pennsylvania Law School. 25 years’ experience in international arbitration; practiced in New York, London, Madrid and Amsterdam. Chambers/Legal 500 ranked for the U.S. and Latin America. Dunelm, B.A. Law (Hons.) 1995.

 

Charles T. Kotuby Jr
	Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and the University of Durham Law School. Former partner at Jones Day in Washington DC 15 years of international arbitration and public international law experience. Ranked Band 1 for International Arbitration in Chambers USA Dunelm LLM (Hons.) 2

Course Fee

The course fee varies: GBP 850 for Durham University students, GBP 950 for students from other universities, and GBP 1650 for professionals. This fee covers all course materials, sessions, and event attendance including morning and afternoon refreshments, lunch, tea/coffee.

A GBP 100 non-refundable deposit is required for registration confirmation which will be deducted from the tuition fee. Full refunds (except deposit) are offered for cancellations made at least 14 business days before the course start date. Later cancellations are non-refundable, but participants will receive course materials and, if available, access to webcasts.

Alumni discount

We are excited to be able to offer a Durham University Alumni discount of 10% upon booking. Please choose the 'Durham University Alumni' option upon registration. If you book before 15 April 2025 you receive both the Early Bird and the Alumni discount (10+10%).

Please note that if you are a current Durham Student with Alumni Status, you should use the 'Durham Student' option upon registration. 

Course Credits

Upon completion of our Summer Course, you will be issued a certificate of completion. You must then check with the international office of your institution if you will be awarded credit for completing our Summer Course, but, in our experience, many institutions will allow this. Durham Law School will provide any necessary supporting evidence to help evaluate the worth of the course.’
