Professor Deirdre McCann co-organises global labour conference with the UN International Labour Organisation
Professor Deirdre McCann co-organised a major international conference last week in collaboration with the UN International Labour Organisation and international partners including Cornell University’s Industrial and Labour Relations (ILR) School, the Amsterdam Institute for Labour Studies/Hugo Sinzheimer Instituut (AIAS-HSI), University of Amsterdam, the Centre for Informal Sector and Labour Studies (CISLS), Jawaharlal Nehru, India, the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law (CELRL), and the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), Brasilia, Brazil.
The Regulating for Decent Work Conference (RDW) is held every two years at the ILO HQ in Geneva. The Conference was co-founded by Professor McCann and brings together researchers and policy-makers from across the world to reflect on major challenges in the world of work and laws and policies that support decent work.
This year’s conference attracted more than 300 participants. The focus was the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world of work and the policies that are needed for a ‘human-centred’ recovery. Papers addressed a range of themes including preserving jobs during the pandemic, the wage and poverty effects of lockdowns, platform work, domestic workers, trade union strategies, and the informal economy.
In his closing remarks, the ILO’s Director-General Guy Ryder, stressed the value of the RDW Conference in supporting the ILO’s engagement with the academic community.
See further details on the Conference website. Videos of the Conference sessions will be available on the ILO’s YouTube channel. Further details on Professor McCann’s research can be found on her website and on Twitter.
