Dr Mark Amakoromo, a postdoctoral researcher at Durham Law School, has recently submitted input to the UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change for a thematic report on human rights in the context of climate change, focusing on the Fossil Fuel-based Economy and Human Rights.
Together with Dr Chitzi Ogbumgbada (Exeter Law School) and Dr Godswill Agbaitoro (Essex Law School), the submission highlights the impacts of the fossil fuel-based economy on human rights and its implications for the just transition away from fossil fuels. They advocate for a transition away from fossil fuels that emphasizes human and people’s rights, fairness, and equity. They also advise that implementing the CBDR-RC principle in facilitating a just transition away from fossil fuels and the fossil fuel phaseout should reflect solidarity with clear responsibilities for all parties.
