A number of individuals taking part in experimental lab work

The Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences have led on an exciting research project driven by Dr Lindsay Macnaughton (PI) investigating an innovative, non-invasive technology to measure blood lactate conducted in partnership with Applied Monitoring Ltd (AML).

To date, the partnership has seen the completion of 2 successful studies, with futures studies to be expected. The success of these studies and partnership has developed into conversations with prominent industry companies within the field of health and sport science and is sure to make an impactful change within both.

During the summer period, two representatives from wearable technology giants, Garmin, were welcomed from the US and spent the day in the Maiden Castle laboratories at Durham University to observe an example of the work that has been completed and discuss opportunities to develop the new technology further. The day displayed the cohesive nature that can occur between research and industry and was a positive experience for the research group (Lindsay Macnaughton (PI), Amy Booth (PDRA), Rob Hunter and Ryan DeOrio (Lab Technicians)), receiving excellent feedback on the quality of teamwork and research that was observed. The research team are excited to continue moving forward and thank AML for the continued partnership
